When families begin planning an outdoor photography session, one of the first questions that usually comes up is, “What time should we take our photos?”
The time of day can make a noticeable difference in how your photographs look and feel. For outdoor sessions, I often recommend planning around golden hour, when the sun is lower in the sky and the light becomes softer and warmer.
Golden hour is beautiful, but it isn’t a strict rule. When planning golden hour family photography in Northeast Ohio, I also consider the season, location, weather, and—most importantly—what will work well for your family.
What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour refers to the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low in the sky. Instead of the brighter overhead light we see during the middle of the day, the light tends to be softer, warmer, and more directional.
For family photography, this can create beautiful skin tones, softer shadows, and that warm glow you often see in outdoor photographs taken near sunset.
It also gives us more flexibility to photograph your family naturally. Kids can move, explore, play, and interact while I use the changing light around us rather than keeping everyone in one carefully shaded spot.
Is Golden Hour the Best Time of Day for Family Photos?
Golden hour is one of my favorite times for outdoor family sessions, but the best time of day for family photos depends on more than sunlight.
If you have babies or toddlers, their schedules matter. A sunset session isn’t necessarily the best choice if it begins right when your child normally goes to bed. Older children may have more flexibility, which can make evening sessions easier.
The season also makes a big difference here in Northeast Ohio. Summer sunsets happen much later than fall sunsets, so the same type of evening session could begin at very different times depending on the month.
That’s why I prefer to choose your session time based on your individual family rather than giving everyone the same standard start time.
Morning vs. Evening Golden Hour
Both morning and evening sessions can give us beautiful outdoor light, but they offer slightly different experiences.
Morning sessions can be wonderful for families with young children who naturally wake up early. Parks and outdoor locations are often quieter, temperatures can be cooler during the summer, and little ones may be at their happiest earlier in the day.
Evening golden hour is generally the more familiar choice for sunset family photos in Ohio. As the sun begins to lower, we can get warm backlighting and beautiful changes in the sky and surrounding landscape.
For families with older children, evening sessions are often fairly easy to accommodate. With younger children, however, we’ll want to consider dinner, naps, and bedtime before deciding whether sunset is really our best option.
How I Choose the Right Time for Golden Hour Family Photography in Northeast Ohio
There isn’t one golden-hour start time that works throughout the year.
Sunset changes significantly between summer and late fall in Northeast Ohio. The location matters, too. An open field receives light very differently from a wooded park, and trees, hills, buildings, and even the direction we’re photographing can affect how quickly we lose the sun.
Because of that, I look at both the location and time of year when recommending your session time. I may suggest starting earlier at a heavily wooded location, while an open field could allow us to photograph much closer to sunset.
This is also why choosing your location and session time together can be so helpful. Instead of simply picking a pretty place, we’re choosing a setting that works with the light we expect to have.
What Happens if It’s Cloudy?
This is Northeast Ohio, so we definitely need to talk about clouds.
Golden hour doesn’t always mean we’re going to have a bright, glowing sunset. Sometimes Ohio gives us gorgeous sunshine, and sometimes it gives us an entire sky of gray.
Fortunately, beautiful family photography doesn’t depend on having a perfect sunset.
Cloud cover can create wonderfully soft, even light that photographs beautifully. On an overcast evening, we may not get the same golden glow, but we can still create warm, natural photographs of your family.
I pay attention to the weather and available light so you don’t have to spend the week before your session obsessively refreshing the forecast.
What If Golden Hour Doesn’t Work for Your Family?
This is probably the most important part: your family does not need to completely rearrange life around golden hour to have beautiful photographs.
If sunset falls at 8:30 p.m. and your toddler is normally asleep by 7:30, tell me. If mornings are chaos in your house, we don’t need to schedule a sunrise session simply because the light is beautiful.
There are other ways to work with outdoor light. Open shade, wooded locations, cloudy conditions, and carefully selected settings can give us beautiful results at other times of day.
I’d much rather photograph your child when they’re comfortable and able to enjoy themselves than insist on the “perfect” lighting conditions while everyone is exhausted.
Preparing for Your Golden Hour Family Photos
Once we’ve chosen the location and time, there isn’t much you need to do differently for a golden hour session. I recommend giving yourself plenty of time to get ready so you aren’t rushing out the door, especially if we’re trying to work within a relatively short window of evening light.
Your clothing can also complement the setting and season. Soft neutrals, earth tones, muted colors, and subtle textures often photograph beautifully outdoors, but the most important thing is choosing clothing that feels like your family.

Planning Your Golden Hour Family Photography Session in Northeast Ohio
