There’s something about county fair season that feels like the unofficial end of summer in Northeast Ohio. The evenings are starting to cool down, school is back in session, and suddenly everyone is talking about fair food and making plans for Canfield.

If you’re looking for family fall activities around Youngstown, the Canfield Fair is an easy one to add to your calendar. Between the animals, rides, exhibits, entertainment, and plenty of fair food, there’s something for almost every age.

And Canfield isn’t your only option. Several Northeast Ohio county fairs happen around the same time, so I’ve gathered a few dates and details to help you plan your family’s fair season.

A Youngstown-Area Tradition for the Whole Family

If you live around Youngstown, chances are the Canfield Fair is already part of your end-of-summer plans. The 2026 Canfield Fair runs September 2 through September 7 at the Canfield Fairgrounds in Canfield.

There is plenty to keep families busy for an entire day. Kids can visit the livestock barns, see tractors and agricultural exhibits, ride the midway rides, play games, and, of course, convince you they absolutely need a giant lemonade and something deep-fried.

If you’re visiting with younger children, I recommend arriving earlier in the day. You may avoid some of the larger evening crowds, and little ones can enjoy the fair before they’re tired from a full day of excitement.

Before you go, take a look at the daily schedule as well. There are different events and entertainment throughout the fair, so a little planning can help you decide which day works best for your family.

Portage County Randolph Fair

Another Family Fair to Visit in August

If your family is ready for fair season before Canfield begins, the Portage County Randolph Fair is another option. The 2026 fair runs August 25 through August 30 in Atwater.

The Randolph Fair offers many of the things families love about a traditional county fair, including livestock, exhibits, food, and grandstand entertainment. The 2026 schedule also includes demolition derbies, tractor and truck pulls, a rough truck contest, and Kids Power Wheels events.

This could be a fun way to squeeze in one more summer family outing before everyone settles completely into the school-year routine.

The Great Geauga County Fair

A Labor Day Weekend Tradition in Northeast Ohio

If you don’t mind taking a drive from the Youngstown area, The Great Geauga County Fair in Burton is another one worth putting on your fall list. The 2026 fair takes place September 3 through September 7, which means it overlaps with Canfield Fair weekend.

The Great Geauga County Fair has a long history in Northeast Ohio and is recognized as Ohio’s oldest continuous county fair. Its history dates back to 1823.

Families will find animals, rides, food, exhibits, and plenty of activities for kids. There are also some classic fair contests that make this one especially fun, including frog jumping, rooster crowing, kiddie tractor pulls, and a diaper dash. Children age six and younger receive free fair admission, although rides are purchased separately.

Tips for Taking Kids to a Northeast Ohio County Fair

A little preparation can make a long fair day much easier, especially when you’re bringing younger children. Comfortable shoes are probably at the top of my list. Fairgrounds involve quite a bit of walking, and the ground may be uneven or muddy depending on the weather.

I’d also bring your usual mom survival kit: sunscreen, wipes, water, an extra outfit for little ones, and a few snacks. Check the fair’s policies before packing a larger bag or bringing outside food, since rules can vary.

It’s also helpful to look at admission prices, ride information, parking details, and the daily event schedule before leaving home. Instead of trying to see everything, choose a few activities your family really wants to experience and let the rest of the day unfold from there.

Take the Fair Pictures—Even If They Aren’t Perfect

County fairs are filled with opportunities for some of my favorite kinds of childhood photos. Think messy faces covered in powdered sugar, little hands holding ride tickets, huge smiles on the carousel, or your child proudly showing you the animal they’ve been talking about all afternoon.

You don’t have to stop everyone and ask them to smile at the camera. In fact, some of the best photographs happen when kids are busy enjoying themselves and completely forget the camera is there.

And make sure you get into a few pictures, too. Hand your phone to someone else for a minute. Years from now, your kids will want to see that you were there enjoying these days with them.

Add the Canfield Fair 2026 to Your Family’s Fall Plans

Whether the Canfield Fair 2026 is an annual tradition for your family or you’re taking your kids for the first time, county fair season is such a fun way to transition from summer into fall.

Visit the animals, let the kids pick a ride, share a funnel cake, and take plenty of pictures along the way. You don’t have to do everything for your children to remember it as a special family day.
